Back To School Night Information
Welcome to Back to School Night! I am pleased that you could be here. My name is Mrs. Mannion and I am THRILLED to be your teacher this year! It’s going to be a fun year full of lots of learning, and new adventures. I can’t wait to see what the year has in store for us!
Tonight I will give you a brief overview of the curriculum, policies, and classroom procedures used in second grade. If you have any general questions I will be happy to answer them tonight. However, any specific questions about your child can be discussed at conference time, or you can schedule an individual meeting with me.
*Arrival/Dismissal
Your child is expected to be in school on time. School begins at 7:50 a.m. & dismissal is 2:55 p.m.
Classroom Guidelines/Procedures
There is a procedure for almost everything we do in our room, and your children will learn these procedures during the first few weeks of school. This helps our days run smoothly and creates an environment that is conducive to learning.
Uniform Policy
Your child must be in FULL uniform on a daily basis.
-For the boys, this uniform consists of white shirt with plaid tie, gray pants, black belt, black socks, and black shoes. There is a summer uniform option as well. This uniform consists of maroon SMT golf shirt, gray pants, black belt, black socks, and black shoes. Summer uniform can only be worn during the dates the school decides on. Please keep an eye out for these dates.
-For the girls, this uniform consists of white shirt with maroon cross tie, plaid jumper, maroon knee socks or tights, and maroon saddle shoes. The summer uniform for girls consists of maroon SMT golf shirt, gray skort, maroon knee socks, and maroon saddle shoes.
When your child is wearing his/her winter uniform, a school sweater is also required.
*Please make sure your child's name is written on school sweaters and sweatshirts. Your child will be responsible for making sure he or she brings home belongings every day (school sweatshirts, sweaters, hats, gloves. etc).
Specials
We will have each special once a week. I will give you the schedule when I receivie it. Your children will be expected to behave in all specials and they will be given a grade for each special.

Parent/Teacher Relationship
I believe that a good parent-teacher relationship is necessary for maximum school success. Throughout the year I will communicate with you through notes, e-mails, and parent-teacher conferences. I encourage you to contact me if you have any questions or concerns.
My email address is
[email protected]. Email is preferred. Thank you!
Please check my classroom website weekly for important information. http://smt2ndgrade.weebly.com/
Notes/Money
Please send all notes to school in an envelope. If the note is for me I kindly ask that you date and sign the note. If it is necessary for your child to bring money to school please send it in a sealed envelope or baggie with the following information written on it:
Your child’s first and last name.
The amount of money.
The purpose for the money. (ex: lunch money, Dress Down Day, pizza lunch)
Teacher’s name and room number (Mannion-218)
Homework Copybook and Take-Home Folder
Students will be bringing home their homework copybook, and take home folders each night. Homework books will have homework and other important information written in them. Please check your child’s homework copybook each night to ensure that his or her homework is being completed. I will check your child’s H book during the first few weeks to make sure the proper assignments are written down. As your child becomes comfortable with the routine, it will be his or her resposibitly to make sure all homework is copied down correctly. Please return and send all notes to school in your child’s take home folder. All important papers will be sent home in this folder for you to see. Homework books and take home folders must be returned each day.
Homework Policy
Homework will always be written in your student’s assignment book (H copybook). The Take Home Folder should go home and back to school every day! Homework will be assigned most nights and should take your child no longer than 20-25 minutes to complete. If it takes your child much more or less time, please inform his/her teacher. All homework is due in the morning upon arrival. Homework assignments may require parent participation (ie: listening to your child read a story). There might be quizzes given in the classroom that are nearly identical to homework assignments. Completing homework is a way to study for quizzes. It is the student’s responsibility to be sure that homework is taken home, completed and returned to school on time.
Tests
I will give at least a few days notice for all tests, but please start reviewing as soon as a date is set. Graded tests will be sent home in your child's test folder to be signed and returned the next day. Grades will be posted in MSP (My Student's Progress website).
Grading system:
98-100= O (Outstanding
92-97= VG (Very Good)
85-91= G (Good)
76-84= S (Satisfactory)
70-75= I (Improvement Needed)
0-69= U (Unsatisfactory)
Changes in Transportation
If there is any change in transportation a written note with the date of the change of transportation will be needed. Please do not rely on your child to tell me this information, because children often become confused and relay messages incorrectly. If a written note is not received, your child will be sent home by his/her usual method of transportation. Emailed notes are not permitted. Your cooperation is so important to ensure your child's safety every day!

Second Grade Behavior Policy and Calendar
We have a behavior calendar that you will initial every night. This is a way to communicate with you. The calendar is to stay in your child's homework copybook, and only taken out by the teacher when it is filled.
All children start the day on the color green, “Ready to learn.” If school/classroom rules are not being followed, the child will move their clip to yellow then orange after 2 reminders. If behavior continues to be an issue throughout the day, they will change their clip to red. They will need to sit for a few minutes at recess for their consequence. If the child has had a good day, a happy face will be on his or her calendar. Each child will have a chance to move the clip up to other colors such as blue, purple, and pink. Pink is an outstanding day! If a child is on red, there will be a number or note from me on the calendar. A code can be found on the bottom of the calendar. Your child will color the calendar every day to let you know which color they were on at the end of the day.
At the end of each week, if the children have had a happy face each day, they get a treat from the treasure box or another special incentive.
Birthdays
Treats are welcome in celebration of birthdays (or half birthdays for summer birthdays). You may send in treats like cupcakes, cookies, or munchkins. No cakes please. I ask that you let me know at least a day in advance if you will be sending something in for the class. There are 35 students in our class. If your child is having a party and you wish to invite some students from the class, please mail the invitations home. If you plan to invite the entire class to an event, the invitations may be passed out in school. I will not pass out invitations in school unless everyone is invited. This results in hurt feelings.
***NOTE: These treats must be sent in with your child in the morning or dropped off at the office by 9:30 a.m.
**If your child has an allergy and you would like to send in some special snacks for me to store in the classroom for special occasions such as birthdays please feel free! I will keep them in a cabinet and make sure that when there is a special treat that your student has one of their own.
Snack
Your child needs a small morning snack every day. Please make sure your child's name is on his/her snack. In a few weeks soft pretzel orders will be coming home in the communication envelope. Pretzels can be ordered starting in October.
Breakfast and Lunch
Our students have the option of bringing a lunch to school each day or participating in the free hot lunch program that will begin on Monday, September 14th. We will also be serving a free breakfast each morning, from 7:20 to 7:40 am. This is the same program as last year. This information will also be discussed at each Back-to-School Night and the New Family Night.* If your child will be coming for breakfast, it is important that he or she arrives no later than 7:20 am. Doors will open for those students NOT eating breakfast in school at 7:35. Please do not bring your child to school before 7:35 if they are eating breakfast at home.
*Please send in a cold lunch for your child until the free lunch program begins. This lunch needs to be ready to eat. We do not have a microwave to heat up food. Thank you for your cooperation!
